Everybody has heard of the famous 80-20 rule, which states that 80% of the results of an event result from 20% of the causes. In fact, the same rule can also be used to define a school’s student group, where 20% are engaged and the rest 80% are disengaged. But when we look closely, the student group is divided into a 20-60-20 ratio. The remaining 20% are actively engaged students who are self-motivated and able to follow regular classes. The middle 60% of students are the ones who want to excel but certain factors are pulling them down. A few of these factors include inconsistency, low concentration, intermediate breaks, and failure to follow a particular session. The last 20% are intentionally disengaged.
For a school to show academic excellence, they need to focus on the middle 60%. It is critical to identify the factors leading a student to be part of the middle 60% and assist students to move into the top 20%. Daily quizzing and performance trend analysis can play a major role in identifying the shortcomings. And a personalized learning plan can become a stepping stone for a student’s academic improvement. To be effective, engagement must add development value to students, and students must be able to articulate and realize that value.
